The creator of the hit manga series One Piece, Eiichiro Oda, has been reacting to the death of his idol Akira Toriyama. The two men worked together on a crossover one-shot, and they remained close friends for decades. Upon the announcement of Toriyama’s death, both Oda and Masashi Kishimoto — whose own Naruto manga is another best-selling title — released heartfelt statements that reflected the depth of their friendship and admiration for Toriyama’s work.

Oda first began reading comics in kindergarten, and he determined at the age of four that he would become a manga artist to avoid getting a “real job.” The early days of his career were difficult, as he was impatient and blunt and tended to argue with senior mangaka and editors over issues as big as story approval and as small as workplace music. He is reportedly an ardent worker and perfectionist who sleeps only three hours in a typical work week.

Despite these difficulties, Oda persevered and eventually made his way to the top of the manga industry. After working for a time at Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine, he struck out on his own and established his own studio. He has since gone on to create the massively popular One Piece series, which is currently the best-selling manga in history with more than 523.2 million tankbon copies in circulation.

One Piece is a story about pirates who set out to find the ultimate treasure. It has been adapted into numerous films, television shows and video games, including the Dragon Ball franchise. It has also inspired countless other popular anime and manga series.

Besides creating his own comics, Oda also played an important role in the gaming industry, helping develop some of Japan’s earliest console role-playing games with his work on character designs for the Dragon Quest and Chrono Trigger games. He is credited with revolutionizing the manga industry and breaking down barriers that kept some people from reading them.

He was a beloved icon among both Japanese and international fans, and his works helped inspire a wide range of other creative industries, from film to fashion design. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.

The death of Akira Toriyama has been felt by the entire manga world, especially his colleagues and friends Eiichiro Oda and Masashi Kishimoto, the authors of 'Dragon Ball' and 'Naruto' respectively. Both Oda and Kishimoto considered Toriyama to be their mentor and role model. He was like a brother to them, and they mourned his loss. Toriyama’s legacy will live on for generations to come.
